The Rams produced a dominant 47-0 shutout of local rivals the Sheffield Giants at West Leeds RUFC, with a defensive masterclass and a clinical performance from backup quarterback Dan Haywood after starter Michael Rojas left the field in the third quarter. Three interceptions and two safeties underlined a superb afternoon for the Yorkshire defence.
The tone was set on the very first play from scrimmage. Defensive end Faith Arijoba burst into the backfield to blow up a Giants run for a major loss, and the Rams capitalised moments later when Kelvin Newsome read a pass from Giants quarterback Sam Hayes, picked it off and returned it all the way for a pick-six. The PAT was good to make it 7-0 inside the opening minutes. Following another quick defensive stop, Rojas got the offence moving with a nine-yard read-option run. Liam Calvert delivered a crushing block in the end zone to clear the way for Elliot Jackson on a run, and Trishmpriyo Sarkar added the extra point to extend the lead to 14-0.

After trading possessions, Rojas connected with his receivers to move the Rams into scoring range before the drive stalled at the 30-yard line. Sarkar stepped up and drilled a 43-yard field goal into the wind to push the advantage to 17-0. A phenomenal punt then pinned the Giants back on their own one-yard line, and Nathan Spooner led the charge as the defence swarmed Giants running back Bailey Britain in his own end zone for a safety to make it 19-0. Tyler Broad set the Rams up with a fantastic return from the ensuing free kick, taking the ball back to the 20-yard line. Rojas orchestrated a quick drive from there and Jackson scored his second touchdown of the afternoon, outrunning the Sheffield defence on a wide zone stretch play. The PAT was missed, leaving the score at 25-0.
The Giants executed a solid two-minute drill in the closing stages of the half, using quick out routes to march down the field. On a free-play shot to the end zone, Sukhveer Sagu made a spectacular recovery to tip the ball away from the intended receiver, preserving the shutout at 25-0 heading into halftime.

Nathaniel Derrick gave the Rams excellent field position with a big kick return into Giants territory to open the second half. However, Rojas fumbled on a scramble near the sideline and the ball went out through the end zone for a touchback. Rojas left the field after that play, and Haywood stepped into the quarterback role for the remainder of the game. His first deep drive ended with an underthrown pass, but Broad immediately bailed out the offence by intercepting Hayes on the Giants’ next possession. Haywood then pinned the Giants back inside their own five-yard line with a precision punt, and Laurence Lowish sniffed out a Giants run up the middle right away, tackling Britain deep in the backfield for the Rams’ second safety of the afternoon to make it 28-0.
A fumbled punt return by the Giants handed the Rams excellent field position at the 15-yard line early in the fourth quarter. Haywood capitalised on third-and-seven, rolling out and connecting with Iby Sardar on a diving touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone. The PAT was good to make it 34-0. Haywood then showed off his mobility on the next drive, picking up a crucial first down on a 15-yard scramble. He commanded a steady drive downfield and threw a strike to a wide-open Ben Dolan running a corner route into the end zone. The PAT was good to extend the lead to 41-0.
The Rams executed a surprise pooch kick and Broad recovered the loose ball from the bottom of the pile to give the offence the ball straight back. On second-and-goal from the 10-yard line, Haywood fired a pass into the corner of the end zone, and Sardar held on through a heavy hit for the final touchdown. The two-point attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 47-0. With time ticking away, Hayes tried to force a deep ball down the sideline, but Derrick battled through the receiver to secure the Rams’ third interception of the day, returning it down to the 12-yard line as the referee signalled the end of the game.

The comprehensive shutout moves the Rams to 5-1 on the season and maintains the pressure on the Newcastle Vikings at the top of the NFC 1 North. The two sides meet again on 21 June when the Rams travel to Norton Sports Park for the return fixture.
