Rams rack up eight scores in pre-season win

Mon Apr 03 2017

The Rams tuned up for the new season with a free-scoring win over the Humber Warhawks on Sunday.

Wide receiver Christian Davies, left, and full-back Alan Stockdale, below, scored two touchdowns apiece in a strong, if patchy, offensive display against NFC2 opposition at the John Charles Stadium.

Quarterback Dan Haywood scrambled for another score and running back Elliott Jackson crossed late on, while returning safety Chris Lawton and all-action linebacker Lysander Code also got in on the act as the Rams emerged 54-0 victors in a valuable pre-season run-out.

Lawton was also involved in the day’s comedy highlight as he attempted to return one of his two interceptions but was inadvertently flattened by team-mate Charlie Gough as the linebacker attempted to block an opponent.

We are grateful to the Warhawks for turning out for a game arranged at short notice, with Rams offensive co-ordinator Nathan Deeley noting: “It was good to finally play a preseason game after a couple of teams dropped out against us.

“With a large number of rookies on both sides of the ball it was essential that we saw them in a live game. Experience is vital to their progression and it was good to see the rookies carrying over their strong work in training to the game.

“There’s competition for starting spots and game time at every position across the roster and this helped to clarify who will make an impact this season. The Warhawks were a well-drilled team and it was a good test of what we need to improve upon before Newcastle visit on the 16th.”

That game against the newly-promoted Vikings marks the first of four successive home games to kick off our NFC1 North season - we hope to see you there!
