The Rams fell to a 27-7 home defeat against the Newcastle Vikings at West Leeds RUFC, as the visitors clinched a perfect 8-0 regular season. Despite a ferocious defensive first quarter that included a blocked field goal and a stunning fumble recovery, the Rams could not contain Newcastle’s passing attack in the second quarter and were made to pay for costly turnovers in the fourth.

The Rams won the toss and deferred, and Tyler Broad immediately set an aggressive tone with a massive hit on the opening kickoff return. The defence backed up that intent by forcing a quick three-and-out on a third-and-long incompletion. Newcastle put together a heavy interior running drive later in the quarter, earning a first-and-goal from the 9-yard line, but Kai Fahy broke up a pass on second down and the Rams’ rush blocked a 40-yard field goal attempt following an awkward snap, keeping the game scoreless.
The defensive highlight of the opening quarter came right before the break. Newcastle running back Eden Harrison hurdled a defender and broke into the open field for a massive gain, but Jonny Gritt chased him down from behind in a full-field sprint, punching the ball loose and recovering it himself to deny what looked a certain touchdown.
Newcastle broke through early in the second quarter. Facing a 1st-and-20 after a holding call, Vikings quarterback Ryan Vale launched a 50-yard bomb down the left sideline to wide receiver Aaron Wall, who beat man coverage for the touchdown. A defensive offside on the Rams nullified a blocked PAT attempt, and the re-kick was good to make it 7-0. Michael Rojas responded by connecting with Dan Haywood on a sharp 20-yard post route over the middle on a crucial 3rd-and-6 for the Rams’ biggest offensive chunk of the half, though the drive stalled when a sideline pass to Matt Snell was ruled incomplete.
Within the two-minute warning, Vale engineered a clinical drive. Extending the play on a scramble drill, the Vikings quarterback whipped the ball back across his body to find Wall in the back of the end zone for his second touchdown of the half. The PAT was good to extend the lead to 14-0 at halftime.

The Rams came out firing in the second half with high-tempo execution. Elliot Jackson opened up the ground game with back-to-back double-digit chunk runs, and Rojas pulled off a deceptive play-action fake to target Ben Dolan down the seam to the 3-yard line. Nathaniel Wyse punched it in up the gut on the next play, and Trishmpriyo Sarkar’s extra point cut the deficit to 14-7.
The Rams defence kept the momentum alive when Newcastle drove right back into Yorkshire territory, facing a 4th-and-inches. The Vikings attempted a play-action pass over the middle, but Daniel Barker got his hands up to bat the ball down, forcing a turnover on downs.

Broad made another impact play on the first snap of the fourth quarter, reading a deep shot from Vale over the middle and leaping to intercept, returning it to the Newcastle 28-yard line. The Rams could not capitalise, however. On 3rd-and-8, Rojas forced a throw over the middle into triple coverage and Newcastle linebacker Robbie Brumpton dropped into the passing lane to pick it off. The Vikings converted the turnover into a field goal to push the lead to 17-7.
Needing a response, the Rams’ offence suffered another setback when the ball was popped loose on an interior carry by Jackson, with Newcastle recovering in the red zone. The Vikings capitalised on the short field with another field goal to stretch the gap to 20-7.
With roughly 1:20 remaining and the Rams turning the ball over on a failed fourth-down scramble, Newcastle looked to run down the clock. Harrison found a crease up the middle, hit the secondary with no safety help over the top and raced the distance for a long touchdown run. The PAT was good to make it 27-7. In the final seconds, Rojas went deep in desperation but Newcastle safety Johnny Frame sat on the route and brought down a game-ending interception, allowing the Vikings to take a knee and preserve their undefeated record.
The defeat drops the Rams to 6-2 on the season and confirms Newcastle as NFC 1 North champions with a perfect 8-0 regular-season record. The Rams’ six wins are enough to secure a playoff wildcard place, and the focus now shifts to the post-season.
